The SIL 20 for 2.0 Team wishes to thank Helene Blowers of the Public Libraries of Charlotte Mecklenberg County for developing the original Learning 2.0 program and sharing this program with the library community worldwide. Our program was built upon not only the PLCMC program but those of King County Library System, Skokie Public Library, as well. Without the help of these libraries, we would have no program.

#2 Create a blog and share your thoughts.

Now that you’ve done some exploring around this website and understand how this program will work, it’s time to setup your very own personal blog to begin recording your thoughts, discoveries and exercises.

Blogs seem to be everywhere these days. Political candidates John McCain, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton all have blogs. Your local newspaper and television stations all blog about the day’s news. And of course there are library blogs as well.

You may even read the Collection Development blog to keep up with new books and collection news. But hearing about blogs, and reading blogs isn’t quite the same thing as creating your own blog.

Watch this video that explains blogs in plain english.

Blogger has a nice little tour you can take, that’ll help you get started if you want even more information.

For this program we recommend you use Blogger * a popular free online blog hosting service that is easy to use. Your blog will be your tool for sharing your thoughts, and insights about the web 2.0 technologies you’ll be discovering as you progress through Sno-Isle’s 20 for 2.0 program. It will also be how the 20 for 2.0 Team will track your progress as you complete each discovery exercise.

*Use of Blogger is only a recommendation. Another blog hosting site is WordPress , if you are more comfortable with WordPress or another blog host, please feel free to use it.

So, let’s get this party started.

Try it Out

1. Go to the Blogger website: www.blogger.com

2. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on ‘Create Your Blog Now

3. This is what you’ll see:

Create a Google Account
You’ll need to set up a Google Account to use Blogger – follow the instructions and click continue.

A couple of notes:

  • Google will ask for an existing email address–feel free to use your Sno-Isle email address for this sign-up.
  • How you choose identify yourself on your blog is your decision. You can blog under an anonymous screen name, or as yourself. The 20. for 2.0 team are the only staff who need to know your identity and we’ll ask you for that later.

4. Give your blog a name.

This is what you’ll see:
Name Your Blog

Having trouble coming up with a name for your blog? Try this fun little site.

5. Choose a Template for your blog.
This is what you’ll see:

Choose Your Template

Blogger has lots of templates to choose from, so show the world your style. If you decide you don’t like it, or get bored with the look of your blog you can change it later. Its like redecorating your living room without all the heavy lifting! Cool, huh?

6. Create and publish your first blog post.

Your blog has been created

Click on the ’start posting’ link and away you go!

Ah, but now that the cursor is blinking at you like a hypnotist’s watch, and the question is what do I write about?

Here’s some ideas to help you get started.

  • What do you hope to learn from the 20 for 2.0 program?
  • Was setting up a blog easy or hard?
  • Or anything else that strikes your fancy, after all this is your blog, so go forth and proclaim to the world, ‘I am blogger, hear me roar!’

And finally, let us know about your blog.

Send the Team an email sil20for20@gmail.com with the subject line : “I created a blog” Include the following information so we can include your blog in our blogroll.

  • Your name
  • Title of your blog
  • The URL for your blog.

Congratulations! You’ve completed Thing 2.

To get back to your blog and add future postings:

  1. Go to your blog (remember that URL you created earlier–for example ours is http://sil20for20.wordpress.com/)
  2. Look to the top right corner of the screen and click on the ‘Sign In’ link. (If you’ve forgotten your blog URL, head to www.blogger.com and continue with the next step.)
  3. Look to the top right corner of the screen and click the ‘New Blogger’ link.
  4. Log in with your Username and Password (these will be tied to the Google account you set up a few moments ago.)
  5. Find your blog on the ‘Dashboard’ and click on it’s ‘New Post’ link.
  6. Blog on.

Next up: Tracking your progress with permanent URLs and commenting.

  1. Nice little video – the news reporter made me think of Greg Palast. I just wish the mother had hair…

Now the tough part – thinking of a name for my blog!

  2. That was a lot easier than I feared it might be! I’m afraid this (blogging) could be addictive. Now I want to teach my 76 year-old mom to start her own blog. What a great way to have conversations about shared interests or to learn new things, maybe from people I have not even met yet!

  3. The first 1.0 lesson to learn in blogging 2.0 is that someone may actually read what you write! That is a little scary. I will try to not embarrass myself but it may be too late.

  4. I am having fun looking at the Blog titles listed under Participants blogs and trying to guess who is who.

“Elusive” and “Kicking and Screaming” have me curious. I have a few guesses.

    Cheers

  5. How come some of the blog links easily go to the blog (looks like those that used wordpress) and others don’t make a successful link? (the people who used eblog).

  6. I’ve noticed that Blogger doesn’t work in Internet Explorer very well. The letters are on top of each other on the bar across the top of the blog so there is nowhere to click “sign in” to change the blog once it is created. I have used Firefox successfully though. I wanted to also credit this tip to a blogger on our list, but I can’t remember which one. Sorry!

  7. Groovelily-Did you find out how to go to the other blog links? Try going to tools, internet options, advanced options, and scroll down to HTTP 1.1 Settings, check the box for Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections, apply/okay. This worked for me…does it work for you?

  8. Well, I created a blog, with help from Jane. Now I need to successfully post something, my first attempt went into “outer limits” as far as I can tell.

  9. I think I did it, but I can’t find it in the blog list.
    Help

  10. I changed the settings, but it still doesn’t work for some of the links, including my own. The first on the list doesn’t work, but the second does.

  11. Jan, try closing out your browser and then bringing up the site again. Maybe it needs to reset itself? I tried several of the blogs and they all opened for me when I used both Internet Explorer or Firefox as my browser.

  12. Problem 1…When you go to Jibber Jabber’s blog, you get my blog instead. Mine is Karen Gibbs Miller.

Two things make it hard to work with Blogger. One is if your proxy settings under tools/internet options/connections/lan settings is set to CIPA instead of uncensored. The second is that Internet Explorer 7 doesn’t play well with Blogger. Firfox plays a lot better.

Third, I am not sure if you are asking for a cut and paste on the Permalink in number 3 of 2.0, or if you want us to right click and cut and paste the actual URL. Or do I have it all wrong?

  13. Karen,
Problem 1 solved. I just put the wrong URL in the blogroll, so its correct now–if only everything were so easy.
Problem 2 You’re correct proxy setting do cause problems–I’ve put information about these in the FAQs. And I like firefox also.

We need the permalink for the individual post, not the URL for page. A page could contain several small postings each with their own permalink, in this case the URL in the address bar would be incorrect for all but the most recent post.

  14. What I did was right click on the individual postings permalink (I think that bar you showed in #3 is a permalink?), and then went to properties and copied and pasted the address I found there.
Is that right, or did I make it harder than it was supposed to be?
    I still am confused.
    Karen

  15. Okay, so we have filters designed to screen offensive images, words etc. Can someone come up with a Cute Filter? At least a warning: “This site contains images of kittens.” I know I”D appreciate it!

  16. I unable to add elements to my blog. when I look at my template, i don’t see options for adding photos, html, etc. i’ can edit existing elements. i’ve had the capability before, but for some reason it’s gone away. can you help?

  17. So I finally posted my blog, now I can’t wait to check out some of the others that are already posted. And get caught up with the assignments.

  18. Ginny,
In the blue nav bar at the top
    go to Customize>Layout>Page Elements

At the bottom of the screen should be a general representation of your page. In the both the column and near the bottom should be add page element links. Clicking on either of those will pull up a list of elements polls, pictures, html and all that good stuff. If that doesn’t come up for you, let me know.

  19. [...] post relates to these links to the Getting Started and Share Your Thoughts classes. [...]

  20. Well, this is different.
