Handy Link to the Progress Log
———————————————————–
Well here you are, you’ve made it through 2 of the 20 Things in the Sno-Isle 20 for 2.0 program. Tracking your progress won’t take much time, so you’ve got some time to explore a bit.
Take a few minutes to:
Read some of your colleague’s blogs and leave a comment.
Here are a few things you might want to look for as you read.
- Was anything similar/different to your experience so far, how so?
- Did anyone have a helpful tip to offer?
- Or a problem that you could help with? If so, did you leave a comment?
Now, think about what you read, and post to your blog.
Okay moving on, its time to learn how to record your progress. Last week you registered your blog by sending the 20 for 2.0 Team a email with the name of your blog, it’s URL and your name, so it could be entered into the Participant’s blogroll. From now on each week as you post to your blog about the 20 Things, enter the permalink for your post in the Progress Log available on the Intranet.

Accessing the Log
To use the log, simply sign in with your staff I.D. in the same way you access other Intranet applications such as Tech Reports and RINC. Once you’ve signed into the log you can mark off the things you’ve completed, add the permalink for your blog posting, and then click submit to save your progress.
Blog each week, and starting today you’ll also need to include the URL for the permanent link a.k.a. permalink to each of your blog posts. Your posts should detail your thoughts, findings, as well as answer any questions we ask you about the 20 Things.
What and where is a permalink? Each blog post has its own distinct URL or permalink. Depending on which Blogger template you chose, the permalink can be found either through the post’s title, or through a link at the bottom of the post that contains the date or time.
Here’s what a sample permalink looks like.

The 20 for 2.0 team will be reading your posts each week, and even leaving a comment once in a while. Commenting is an important part of blogging. It offers your readers a chance to start a conversation with you and other readers about what you’ve written.
Try it Out:
Register your blog and record your progress.
- Share your thoughts in your blog about the program so far.
- Go to the Sno-Isle 20 for 2.0 Progress Log.
- Record your progress so far by checking off the completed boxes for things 1 and 2 and then entering the permalink for this week’s post.
- Click submit to save your progress.
Congratulations, you’ve completed Thing #3.

Since I’m using WordPress, will I just put my mcresur.wordpress.com URL for the permalink?
In WordPress, generally speaking you can just right click on the title of your post and copy the link location. The title serves as the permalink in WordPress.
I just discovered how to get follow-up comments emailed to you after you have left a comment on someone else’s blog. You have to be signed in to Blogger and when you leave a comment (on another blogger blog) a check box appears that allows you to have follow-up comments emailed to you. It doesn’t work if you are not signed in though.
I am having a problem opening some of the staff blogs. I get a message asking if I want to save it to a file. Other ones open fine.
Try checking the proxy settings on your pc. The FAQ page of this blog has a link with instructions on how to do this.
Hi Jim,
I am having the same problem on my computer as Kathleen however from different computers I can access the blogs just fine. I checked my proxy settings and it is the same as the other computers that do work. Any other suggestions? val
My proxy settimgs are correct and I still can’t open the blogs. Other ideas?
A couple of items…the link for “toddler rocks” in the list at the right doesn’t go anywhere useful, try it and you’ll see what I mean. There are a number of the blogs that after I access them from the list at the right will not allow me to return to this page. As I hate being hijacked in this way by webpages, those blogs won’t be viewed regularly by me. Also in the #3 instructions it says “register your blog.” How? Where? Care to provide further information and instructions? Or is this just a fancy way of saying “fill in the progress log?”
Liz, I think your profile may not yet have been updated on the server. Wait awhile and try again. Or talk to your tech liasion about this. jim
Dahleah,
My bad on the toddler rocks link. I put in a sentence for a URL, and strangely enough it doesn’t work–imagine that. Apologies also to toddler rocks for putting a dead link up to your blog. Its fixed now.
I have nothing to say about blogs that hijack your browser, since its out of my control.
Lastly–just another way of saying use the log, as you surmised.
I cut and pasted to my log the url that goes to my post. Is there an easier way? I was hoping to right click my post title because right clicking is my favorite way to get things done.
Did someone figure out *the* easiest way to enter the “permalink” to the log from blogger?
Right click?
I am still getting the error message when trying to look at most of the blogs. My proxy settings are correct and it’s been four days. Ideas?
Christa says:
This problem sound similar to some IE Downloading issues that Dustin Hyle and I were running into on my machine. There were some bizarre manifestations of the problems.
Can you check that your Internet Options>Security Settings>Internet Zone>Custom Level have the following set up:
Downloads:
Automatic prompting for file downloads: Disable
File download: Enable
Font download: Enable
You might also try resetting this zone’s security to “Medium-high (default)”.
If all else fails, the Firefox browser has also been tested and we haven’t run into any problems in that browser so far.
Hi to all who are getting error messages when trying to look at other peoples blogs. Here is the fix…
Go to tools, internet options, advanced, scroll down to the HTTP 1.1 settings. The two boxes need to be checked. enjoy, val
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Val! I used your fix and now I can finally get in to more of the other blogs. I was beginning to feel very cut off, so this is a relief.
I was thinking about setting up a Meebo account but I couldn’t figure out what the Widget name should be. Also it refers to my website. I don’t have a website but have the blog. Is that what they are referring to? Rosy
Rosy,
Good for you, I love Meebo. Here’s what I’d do if I were you.
I would create a meebo account by going to the meebo site. Once you’ve done that click on the meebo me widget link near the top of the page. The meebo me widget will live on your blog–that’s the website–they’re asking you for.
Whenever anyone goes to your blog–if you’re online, then they can chat with you. If you’re not online the meebo me widget will hold their message for you until the next time you logon to meebo.
The ability of meebo to hold messages for you when you’re not online is one of the advantages of meebo over other systems like AIM, Google talk and others. WIth these other providers, if you’re not online the message bounces back to the sender–as not received.
If you need more help setting up a meebo account, let me know.
Enjoy!
Jim
Wow, I have a lot to learn. I don’t know what a meebo is or why there should be a widget name. Will this get easier the more I do it? It’s a foreign language to me.
I have never heard of the terms “meebo” or “widget” either!
permalink is a new one to me
