Click here to open the Account Reference Sheet.
IMPORTANT:
Encryption/Password Protection
To password protect your file in OFFICE 2007 version of WORD.
- Click the help icon located in the upper right corner ( it looks like a question mark in a circle) and search on the terms “password protection”.
- Select the “Set a password to open or modify a document, workbook, or presentation” link
- Scroll down and follow the instructions given for “Encrypt and set a password to open a document“.

Auto-capitalizing
The default for Office on your computer may be to auto-capitalize the first letter of table cells. Since many usernames and passwords are case sensitive this could become a problem.
To change the settings in Word
- highlight the first letter in a cell and hover over it until the lightning bolt appears
- click on the drop down arrow next to the lightning bolt
- then click stop Auto-capitalizing First Letters of Table Cells.
- Save the document as you normally would to retain the settings.
This should resolve the problem.

The cells are set to automatically change to first alpha-character to capital. This could cause a problem in the password field.
Thanks for pointing this out, you’re exactly correct this could be big problem down the road for us all. The auto-capitalize function is a default setting in Office, rather than the formatting of the Account Reference Sheet. I have added instructions about how to change the settings on your document to the Reference Sheet page, so that we’ll all be able to avoid the problem.
I may be the only one who had this issue, but I kept clicking on the wrong Account Reference Sheet link, since there are two of them worded exactly the same above the instructions. Might it be helpful to change the document link slightly to say Download Account Reference Sheet or Account Reference Sheet (Word Document) or something to that effect?
Yes, that is confusing, I changed the title of the page to Account Management, and the wording for the link to the Account Reference Sheet, so hopefully its all clear now.
I got 404 file not found when I clicked your link to the file.
I will reload the file which should solve the problem. Should be just a few minutes and it’ll work.
When I try to open an Account Reference Sheet I get an error message:
404 — File not found.
You can create your own free blog on WordPress.com.
Where do I go from here?
Okay, I’ve reloaded the file and checked the link several times and it seems to work now. I made a change on Monday and it worked for almost 200 of you yesterday, and is broken this morning. I’m not sure what happened, but it seems to be resolved now. Thank you for your patience.
I’ve done # 1 Getting Started, but what happens next? Will I receive a work email? A Gmail email (which is really kinda fun to say) or a word from the heavens? I’ve been sitting here for about ten minutes, looking at the different links and I’ll be darned if I can find something that tells me what to expect next. Feels like time’s awastin’…
If you’ve got your Gmail account then you should open the Account Reference Sheet put in your username and password and save that information to your My Documents folder, so you’ll have a reference point to go back to should you forget your password. Once, you’ve done those two things–kick back and relax–or better yet offer yourself as a resource to any of your co-workers who needs a bit of help.
I searched on “password protection” but didn’t see “Encrypt and set a password to open a document.” There was a link for “Set a password to open or modify a document…” Is that the link to follow?
Yes, sorry–I got a step of myself. The first link you follow is the one you mention, “Set a pasword to open or modify a document, workbook, or presentation” AND THEN follow the
Encrypt and set a password to open a document link.
I’ll correct this omission in the blog. Sorry for the confusion and a huge tip of the sombrero for bringing this to our attention!
Did I understand this correctly… i have to save my account reference sheet as a Word 2007 document in order for it be encrypted? the file opened (for me) as a Word 97-2003 document and therefore defaults to saving as such afer i set my password. or is it encrypted as a 97-2003 document also?
Yes once its encrypted–then it is password protected in both versions. It would be nice if we could put the file up on the blog as an OFFICE 2007 version to start with–but WordPress doesn’t suport 2007 yet. So it has to go up as a 97-2003 version and then when you open it either will open in one version or another.
Sorry if that made the water even muddier–its late on a Friday –never a good time for me to try and answer this type of question.
I found the directions confusing at first. Most of our computers are still using Office 2000, but the directions at the top of this page are for Office 2007. Then I noticed later that there are directions at the top of the actual document.
